Tuition Assistance Programs

With the critical shortage of special educators in Virginia, there has never been a better time to seek financial assistance for a career in special education.

Below is a list of federal and state tuition assistance programs as well as individual tuition assistance programs at specific colleges or universities. Please contact college, university, or program coordinators for more information on these tuition assistance programs.

* Special Notice - There may be a service obligation to teach or practice in the special education disability category for which you become endorsed if you receive tuition assistance or other support from these programs. Please contact the project director for more information.



Program Metro READY: University-Community Partnerships to Prepare and Support Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Educators in Urban Inclusive Settings
Type Endorsement Program in Early Childhood Special Education

Description This graduate program will prepare educators to obtain teacher licensure and/or endorsement in early intervention and early childhood special education with an interdisciplinary focus in readiness-oriented early intervention/education and inclusive services. Program Virginia Consortium for Teacher Preparation in Early Childhood Special Education
Type Early Childhood Special Education Competencies
College/University Radford University and Lynchburg College
Description This program, funded by the Virginia Department of Education, is designed to prepare qualified teachers to work with children birth to age five who have disabilities in Virginia. To achieve this goal, the program a) accepts qualified applicants to participate in the Consortium, b) provides them with state-approved coursework in four of the courses required for endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE), and c) offer tuition support (through in-state tuition waivers) for endorsement coursework completed successfully.

Program Tuition Assistance for Early Childhood Special Educators
Type Tuition Reimbursement for Coursework
Description The 2007-2008 Tuition Assistance Program for Early Childhood Special Educators provides tuition reimbursement for full time paraprofessionals working in early childhood special education programs enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses related to special education areas and early childhood special educators teaching children in preschool special education programs.

Program The Commonwealth Special Education Endorsement Program
Type Endorsement Program in Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance
College/University Old Dominion University (Distance Learning Program)
Description This distance learning program is funded to provide coursework meeting licensure requirements in special education with endorsement in learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, or mental retardation for eligible personnel. The applicant must be employed full-time in the Commonwealth of Virginia and assigned to teach students with emotional disturbance, learning disabilities, and/or mental retardation; hold a valid Special Education Conditional License or Provisional License in emotional disturbance, learning disabilities, and/or mental retardation; be recommended by the employing public school division or state-operated program; and be assigned a mentor by the employing public school division or state-operated program. Program Distance Learning in Virginia, Educating Speech-Language Pathologists (DLVE-SLP)
Type Graduate Level Endorsement Program for Speech-Language Pathologist
Description James Madison University, in conjunction with Hampton University, Longwood University and the University of Virginia, is able to provide access to an accredited JMU Masters degree in speech-language pathology through distance education technologies. This program is designed for persons interested in earning a Masters degree in speech language pathology on a part time basis through online technology. "Career changers" and educators are encouraged to apply.

Add-on Endorsement Program in Visual Impairments

Description This initial licensure program prepares personnel to effectively teach students with visual impairments at the graduate and undergraduate (selected universities) levels. The program also offers the five VI courses required for the VI add-on endorsement for already licensed special education teachers. The program is offered via distance education and face-to-face summer institutes. Partial course tuition is paid by a grant from the Virginia Department of Education.

Program Tuition Assistance for Special Educators
Type Tuition Reimbursement for Coursework
Description The 2007-2008 Tuition Assistance Program for Special Educators teaching school-age students (ages 5 to 21) provides tuition reimbursement for special educators holding a valid conditional or provisional license and taking courses meeting special education endorsement competencies AND full time paraprofessionals enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses related to special education.

Program Troops to Teachers
Description Troops-to-Teachers provides Referral Assistance/Placement services and Financial Assistance to military personnel interested in beginning a second career in public education as a teacher. The Virginia office of Troops-to-Teachers office will help applicants identify teacher certification requirements, programs leading to certification, provide financial assistance for these programs and employment opportunities.
