Choose your genre. Are you a high energy rocker? A country music crooner? Or a traditional soloist? Decide what to teach and go from there.
What subjects or topics do you love? What drives you to take the stage to lead a classroom: art, music, science, math? Who do you want to teach: young children, adolescents, or even, young adults?
Talk to your guidance counselor about your interest in teaching. Ask your favorite teachers what made them decide to become teachers and how they did it.
Ask your guidance counselor about the Teachers for Tomorrow program. If your school participates in this program, sign up for the Teacher Cadet course. The Teacher Cadet program is growing every year, so ask if your school is participating. Download a video on the Teachers for Tomorrow program here.
If so you are well on your way to getting stage ready for teaching. You'll need at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Virginia Department of Education has many approved college and university teacher education programs from which to choose.
And don't forget that Virginia's community colleges offer teaching training programs and guarantee admission to many or Virginia's four-year colleges and universities.
